Blank Pages play power pop like it’s 1979.
Funny Pages, the debut album from Jersey’s power pop heroes Blank Pages, features 11 tracks chock full of chiming guitars and tasty hooks. Produced at home with a laptop and minidisc multitrack recorder, the band recorded under the influence of artists like Jason Falkner, the Raspberries, and Superdrag. But when it came time to mix and arrange the tracks, guitarist Greg Potter drew inspiration from the Knack and their 1979 debut, “Get the Knack.”
“I was trying to emulate the approach of that record,” said Potter. “It’s not as heavy as most power-pop, with cleaner guitar tones and lots of energy from a great drummer.”
That energy was provided by new drummer Ed McCaffrey, who joined the band just a month before recording began. The rhythm section was rounded out by founding Blank Pages member and bassist Wayne Philipp, with Potter handling guitars, keyboards and lead vocals. Jon Mollenhauer, Potter’s long-time musical collaborator and childhood friend, contributed lead guitars and mixed the record.
Released in 2000, Funny Pages album was the band’s first official release on the FDR Label, the small NJ indie label with the big power pop heart.
